Circus cats in Missouri need you to take action!
A proposed bill in Missouri would invalidate local bans on the use of wild and exotic animals in entertainment. Tell your state senator that they should protect big cats, not abusive circuses!
Missouri Senate Bill 416 / House Bill 559 would guarantee circuses the right to use wild and exotic animals for entertainment and would make it illegal for any local government to ban circus acts, even if it is done out of concern for public safety or animal welfare.
In 2002, the forward-thinking city of Richmond, MO banned the use of lions, tigers, elephants and other wild and exotic animals in entertainment including circuses, carnivals, and cub petting pay-to-play schemes. Now the state wants to nullify that local ordinance and any others like it that both protect animals and the people in those communities.
SB416/HB559 is a handout to circuses and other businesses that want protection from a society that no longer accepts exploiting animals for profit. The Missouri House already passed a version of this bill introduced by Representative Bryan Spencer. We must now stop it from passing in the Senate. Last year, with your help, we defeated a similar measure from passing, and we must do so again. Legislators need to stop bending to the will of a small yet vocal industry group and finally read the writing on the wall - Missourians don't want to see animals abused for entertainment!
Local governments know what's best for the people in their community. The state should respect the choices of cities like Richmond, which long ago decided it wanted to protect wild and exotic animals from cruel and inhumane treatment as well as protect against the hazards of exhibiting dangerous wild animals. Don't let the state turn back the tide on protections for big cats in the circus!
