Stop the trophy hunting of bobcats in California!
Let's end bobcat hunting in California. Let's do it for Windsong.
Do you know Windsong's story?
She's the little bobcat who sparked the beginning of one of the world's largest accredited sanctuaries for big cats and a second-to-none bobcat rehabilitation program. In November of 1992, our founder was at an exotic animal auction, where a taxidermist was bidding to take Windsong's life. Carole rehabbed and released bobcats since she was a teenager and knew they had some fight in them. When she warned the man next to her that the cat he was eagerly offering to buy would rip his face-off, he shrugged off the concern. Windsong wouldn't remain conscious for long - he planned to club her to death in the parking lot to later make her a den decoration. Carole outbid him, saving Windsong's life.
Small and secretive, bobcats have fought all the odds maintaining populations in 47 out of 50 states. Sadly, in 40 of the states where they live, more often than not as the only native wildcat, they are hunted. Their impressive beauty and dignity incite admiration from cat and wildlife lovers alike. It also attracts the eye of trophy hunters who see them as a prized mark. Make no mistake about it, bobcats are not killed for their meat. They are hunted to be stuffed and used as decoration. No different from the fate Windsong narrowly escaped.
The California State Senate will soon vote on AB 1254, a bill to end bobcat hunting. For over two decades, Californians have championed reforms to bobcat management, from banning the use of cruel and archaic steel-jaw leghold traps in 1998 to outright prohibiting bobcat trapping in 2015. All that's left is the trophy hunting of bobcats, an activity that has taken over 10,000 bobcats in the past decade - and there's no good reason for it. A keystone species vital to natural ecosystems, the bobcat is already threatened by ongoing habitat loss and natural disasters that jeopardize their survival in the Golden State.
As Carole left the auction that day, not knowing what the future held, she promised Windsong that she'd never stop fighting for bobcats. It's a promise every one of us at Big Cat Rescue has made. Help us keep that promise, TAKE ACTION.
