Some years our financial need is for big projects. This year what the cats really need to maintain their high quality of life is a growing list of smaller projects that we need help funding.
The cooling equipment for the Food Prep Building walk-in cooler where we thaw the meat and store diets for the next day is ancient and has reached the point where we cannot keep applying patchwork fixes to keep it running. We have to replace it.
The pools that the tigers and servals absolutely love to lounge in typically need refurbishing every 5 years. We have a long list because we focused resources to building additional ones, so we have a backlog of those to refurbish.
The “pressure treated” wood we use for the platforms the cats spend so much time resting on and surveying their kingdoms from do not last as long as they used to because the chemicals that are used to make the wood last longer were found to be harmful. They too need repair or replacement every 3-5 years.
Finally, our bobcat rehab hospital has an outdoor area we built last year for the young orphans that has worked out extremely well. We need to build one for the adult bobcats who come to us injured or sick. Those cats often have to spend months with us, currently confined indoors, which severely limits their stimulation. In some cases, it causes them to become destructive, like chewing on the windowsills. The ability to spend time outside in fresh air with the enriching stimulation of the outdoor smells and observing nature around them would be a huge psychological benefit for them, which can also enhance their healing in part because the sunlight helps them naturally produce vitamin D.
As COVID lingers and facilities around the country have reported big cats catching it despite taking precautions, we continue to take the conservative approach and have not reopened for public tours. That means we rely more than ever on this annual Give Day, our biggest fundraising day of the year.
On behalf of the cats, thanks VERY, VERY much!
